Review: All Her Lies by Matt McGregor

★★★☆☆ Review: First, I would like to thank Inkubator Books for providing me with a free advanced reader copy of this book. This is my honest review. Fiction or rehearsal? Taking a job on a homestead owned by a thriller author and her husband seems like the ideal fresh start for Brie, who is escaping a controlling relationship. But being barred from using internet-enabled devices is unsettling, and is the author contemplating new twists for her next novel, or something more sinister? Brie’s entanglement in the couple’s lives leaves her questioning who can be trusted. All Her Lies starts out strong, and I quickly became engrossed in the plot. Brie is an unlikeable protagonist, but it’s hard not to root for her. As the novel progressed, though, I began to lose interest. Not only was the romantic subplot rushed and unbelievable, but the twists began to feel overdone. The story has good bones but lacks depth. Audience : adult Trigger warnings : violence Recommend...

Editorial Review: Killing Shadows by Nikki Frank

★★★★☆

Review:

This is an editorial review written for Readers' Favorite.

Lurking in the shadows, evil and grotesque creatures have plagued Greyson and Felicity for as long as they can remember. But not all of the supernatural beings in Nikki Frank’s novel Killing Shadows are malevolent. When the angel of death, Adriel, realizes that Felicity can see him, he is determined to test the possibilities that this revelation could create. Why can Greyson and Felicity see otherworldly entities, and are there more humans with this trait? Can humans be used to help the angels to eradicate remalas and agents of demons from Earth?

Killing Shadows is a fast-paced paranormal fantasy novel, best suited to mature young adults or a new adult audience due to sexual themes. Though the book explores the existence of angels and demons, Heaven and Hell, it does not push religious themes or conversion, allowing it to be enjoyed by any reader regardless of faith. What impressed me the most about this book was the worldbuilding. Nikki Frank answered every question I had, such as providing compelling reasons why these young adults could see angels and why despite living for thousands of years, the angels had never encountered any other humans like them. Additionally, the remalas are entirely unique, and I found it refreshing to read about a new fantasy creature. Overall, I greatly enjoyed reading this book and read it in just two days. Killing Shadows ends on a cliffhanger, promising more adventures with Felicity and Adriel’s remala hunting and extermination team, and I am looking forward to the next installment.
