Review: All Her Lies by Matt McGregor

★★★☆☆ Review: First, I would like to thank Inkubator Books for providing me with a free advanced reader copy of this book. This is my honest review. Fiction or rehearsal? Taking a job on a homestead owned by a thriller author and her husband seems like the ideal fresh start for Brie, who is escaping a controlling relationship. But being barred from using internet-enabled devices is unsettling, and is the author contemplating new twists for her next novel, or something more sinister? Brie’s entanglement in the couple’s lives leaves her questioning who can be trusted. All Her Lies starts out strong, and I quickly became engrossed in the plot. Brie is an unlikeable protagonist, but it’s hard not to root for her. As the novel progressed, though, I began to lose interest. Not only was the romantic subplot rushed and unbelievable, but the twists began to feel overdone. The story has good bones but lacks depth. Audience : adult Trigger warnings : violence Recommend...

Review: Paris and the Reaper by Layla Reyne

★★★☆☆

Soul to Find, Book 2

Review:

First, I would like to thank the author and Grey's Promotions for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Paris is doomed to die. When the reaper comes for him on the night his father sacrifices him, rather than deliver his soul, Mac saves him. As a result of his father’s acts, Paris has become a medium and can hear other souls. Employing his artistic talents, he paints the scenes the souls have shown him, giving Mac priceless clues to finding lost souls. In the war of Chaos vs. Nature, Paris has the power to unravel his father’s legacy and build a new future.

Paris and the Reaper by Layla Reyne was marketed as a standalone, but I really feel at a disadvantage not having read the first book. There wasn’t enough explanation about the war between Chaos and Nature, making the world-building feel lackluster. It felt like all action and no world-building. I was also surprised that Paris and Mac are so affectionate with each other right from the beginning. Mac is struggling with grief from losing his first love, which makes his instant comfort with Paris a little curious. Overall, it was a sweet story. Paris and Mac are both deserving of love and of their happily ever after.

Audience: adult
Trigger warnings: violence, death, grief, attempted filicide
Recommended for fans of: urban fantasy, LGBT, M/M romance, paranormal, romantasy, instalove, virgin, tormented MMC, love bonds, shifters, mafia, found family

Publisher's Synopsis:

I was given the name Paris at birth.
So far, I’ve lived up to it; or rather, down to it.
Too pretty, too unfocused, too easy a target.
My father even tried to sacrifice me.

And then I was saved by a beautiful, haunted man.

Mac is a reaper; he delivers lost souls.
But when he came for mine, I wouldn’t let go.
And now I can hear other souls too.
I can help him. Love him, if he’ll let me.

Assuming we survive a conspiracy to bring Chaos through the veil.

Mac says souls get what they deserve.
If I do enough good, then maybe I can be worthy of his.
Maybe I can hold on to him and our bond—forever.

Paris and the Reaper is a soft, swoony, and suspenseful M/M urban fantasy romance. It features a grumpy raven shifter afraid to love and lose again and the sweet, cursed human who makes him want to risk it all.
