Review: All Her Lies by Matt McGregor

★★★☆☆ Review: First, I would like to thank Inkubator Books for providing me with a free advanced reader copy of this book. This is my honest review. Fiction or rehearsal? Taking a job on a homestead owned by a thriller author and her husband seems like the ideal fresh start for Brie, who is escaping a controlling relationship. But being barred from using internet-enabled devices is unsettling, and is the author contemplating new twists for her next novel, or something more sinister? Brie’s entanglement in the couple’s lives leaves her questioning who can be trusted. All Her Lies starts out strong, and I quickly became engrossed in the plot. Brie is an unlikeable protagonist, but it’s hard not to root for her. As the novel progressed, though, I began to lose interest. Not only was the romantic subplot rushed and unbelievable, but the twists began to feel overdone. The story has good bones but lacks depth. Audience : adult Trigger warnings : violence Recommend...

Series: Aspen Ridge, Book 1.5

Review:

First, I would like to thank the author and Luna Literary PR for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ready or Not is a standalone holiday novella set in the Aspen Ridge series by Jenn Plummer. This dark romance is a delicious treat–the full length novels in the series are not dark. Tropes include obsessive stalking, primal play, blood play, and more. The full list of content warnings is provided in the author’s note at the beginning of the book, which can be read in the Amazon sample.

It’s nearly Halloween–Lilith’s favorite holiday. The one day each year that she lets loose. She has always been attracted to her ex-boyfriend’s dad, and after a few chance encounters, she can’t get him out of her head. Unlike his hyper-religious son, Wes craves that spark of darkness he senses in Lilith. He can hardly control himself, crossing boundaries to get closer to her without her knowledge. He has the perfect plan in place–he just needs to wait for Halloween night to claim what’s his.

This book will have your heart racing from the start. Wes’s self-assured, dominant aura is delectable. Lilith knows she is being stalked by someone, but rather than be afraid, she plays into it, teasing her stalker with exhibitionism. Wes and Lilith are so delicious–I wish I could savor them longer. Halloween and the abandoned asylum are the perfect setting for this fast-paced, thrilling ride. This is my first Jenn Plummer novel, and she instantly launched to become one of my favorite authors.

Audience: adult
Trigger warnings: stalking, primal play, blood play, breath play, dub-con
Recommended for fans of: dark romance, erotic thrillers, romance novellas, Halloween

Publisher's Synopsis:

Wes

Lilith Aspen. Daughter of the founding family of our small town, and the most intoxicating woman I’ve ever laid eyes on. She’s also eighteen years younger and my son’s ex-girlfriend. There’s something dark and depraved that she keeps hidden deep inside her. It calls to my primal side that wants to unleash when she’s around. I don’t bother fighting my obsession. She’s my match in every way, she just needs to be shown. Hunting her becomes my addiction. And on Halloween night, I plan to bring her dark side out to play.
