Review: The Predator by J.L. Beck

“The air becomes electrically charged, and I bite back a moan. The possession in his tone and words…how could I ever run from that? But how can I stay, knowing it was never real? He kept me around because he wanted to know if I would remember anything important or incriminating.” (p. 132)

Review:

First, I would like to thank the author and Literally Yours PR, Candi Kane PR, and Booksprout for providing me with a free advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The weak FMC made this one a struggle.

Picking up where The Prey left off, The Predator is the second half of the second duet in the Oakmount Elite series. A synopsis would give too many spoilers for both books, so suffice it to say that Sebastian must save Elyse, but his brand of rescue involves very dark themes. However, his devotion to her is unwavering.

After reading The Prey, I already knew the characters were a little lacking in my opinion, but the action and plot had been great, so I was optimistic about the conclusion of Sebastian and Elyse’s story. Unfortunately, this book was a miss. Not only is it longer than necessary (making this a standalone rather than a duet would have been SO much better), but Elyse becomes unbearable. She has been a victim her whole life, and she never really grows out of the victim mentality. I wanted to sympathize with her, but I couldn’t help being annoyed. She is so self-deprecating for so much of the book that I grew tired of it. (Again, if the duet had been a standalone or even if the second book had been half its length, it would have been more palatable). I have heard that the first duet is better, but I do not plan to continue with this series.

Audience: new adult/adult
Trigger warnings: death, murder, violence, forced medical treatment, drugging, grooming/pedophilia/statutory rape (off page, MMC is victim), sexual assault, loss of pregnancy, kidnapping, gaslighting, human trafficking, animal death/abuse, shame, victim blaming, mental health issues, talk of suicide, bullying, sexism, body mutilation, branding
Recommended for fans of: dark romance, forced marriage, knife play, blood play, obsessed MMC, revenge, breeding, non-con, dub-con

Publisher's Synopsis:

What is a predator without his prey?

Elyse Silver was never mine to keep.

The day I saved her life, I ensured we would forever be enemies.

Hating her was easy.

Bullying her, as simple as breathing.

Stopping myself from falling for her… I had no idea how impossible that would become.

The harder I fought, the deeper I fell.

Love and happiness have never been part of my plan, but letting Elyse go isn’t an option, either.

Unfortunately, the truth always finds a way of revealing itself, and by the time she realizes who the real predator is, it’ll be too late for her to escape the trap I’ve put her in.
