Review: Dead Weight by Hildur Knútsdóttir

★★★★☆ Review: First, I would like to thank Macmillan Audio for providing me with a free advanced listener copy of this audiobook. This is my honest review. Feminine rage and retribution Having read and enjoyed The Night Guest , I was eager to get a copy of Hildur Knútsdóttir's latest English translation! Unnur lives alone until the Cat Distribution System deposits a black cat in her home. Despite finding the cat's owner, the cat keeps returning, and now Unnur must begrudgingly accept that Ásta and her cat will be a regular installment in her home. Getting to know Ásta on a deeper level, she quickly realizes that her new friend is in a dangerous situation and that if she doesn't intervene, no one will. Dead Weight is marketed as horror, but unlike The Night Guest , there are no horror elements. I still really enjoyed it as a fast-paced domestic thriller novella. If you are looking for feminine rage and retribution and a book you can read in a single sitti...

Review: Demon in the Shadows by Thetta James

“As the doors slide open, I turn for one last look at the woman who holds my heart. We’re going to get through this. I don’t know how, but I won’t accept any other outcome. Losing her just isn’t an option.” (p. 113)

Series: Royal Bastards MC Atlanta, GA Chapter, Book 1

Review:

First, I would like to thank the author and DS Book Promotions for providing me with a free advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A steamy marriage-in-turmoil MC romance

Silas has been living a double life. As “Maverick,” the president of the Atlanta, GA, chapter of the Royal Bastards Motorcycle Club, he is ruthless. As Silas, husband of Ember, he is a loyal, devoted partner. Ember’s mother was killed due to her father’s involvement in a motorcycle club, so she has always hated MCs, leading Silas to hide that side of his life from her for five years. When Ember’s past comes back to haunt her, Silas’s secret will be revealed, and she will have to decide if she can stay married to a man who has lied to her for so long.

Demon in the Shadows is a quick, easy read. Fast-paced and full of action, the story grabs ahold of you right from the beginning. Told from multiple points of view–not just those of the two main characters–each scene paints a complete picture of the events in your mind’s eye.

The marriage-in-turmoil trope is one I have been wanting to read for a new perspective on the romance genre, and Thetta James’s book did not disappoint. Silas, despite his secret, is an incredible husband to Ember. While marketed as a dark romance, though, it really isn’t dark at all. There is some triggering content and dark themes, but the romance itself doesn’t fit that description. All in all, I flew through this novel and would love to read the next book when it is released.

Audience: adult
Trigger warnings: murder, death, sexual assault, drug sales, kidnapping, violence, gun violence, assault, battery, miscarriage

Publisher's Synopsis:

Silas/Maverick
Family secrets will inevitably surface, shattering the deep trust we’ve built over the years. In my situation, the concealed aspects of my life, hidden from my wife, were forcefully brought into the light. This not only fractured our trust but also jeopardized everything I hold dear. My biggest mistake was believing, I, Silas “Maverick” Bouvier, was untouchable.

In my role as the President of the Royal Bastards MC Atlanta, GA Chapter, my duty revolves around safeguarding my club and its members.

Simultaneously, as Emberlynne's husband, my duty revolves around protecting her from the dangers hidden amongst the perfect life I created for us.

The coexistence of my dual life was never my intention. Yet, to rescue the love of my life, the inner demon must emerge from the shadows to exact retribution on those who have taken her.

The pivotal question lingers—when she discovers my true identity, will she be able to gaze into my eyes with forgiveness and love for the man she married? Or will she perceive a stranger, harboring resentment for the monster who saved her life?
