Review: All Her Lies by Matt McGregor

★★★☆☆ Review: First, I would like to thank Inkubator Books for providing me with a free advanced reader copy of this book. This is my honest review. Fiction or rehearsal? Taking a job on a homestead owned by a thriller author and her husband seems like the ideal fresh start for Brie, who is escaping a controlling relationship. But being barred from using internet-enabled devices is unsettling, and is the author contemplating new twists for her next novel, or something more sinister? Brie’s entanglement in the couple’s lives leaves her questioning who can be trusted. All Her Lies starts out strong, and I quickly became engrossed in the plot. Brie is an unlikeable protagonist, but it’s hard not to root for her. As the novel progressed, though, I began to lose interest. Not only was the romantic subplot rushed and unbelievable, but the twists began to feel overdone. The story has good bones but lacks depth. Audience : adult Trigger warnings : violence Recommend...

Review: The Flight Between Us by June Sagewood

This review was written for Reedsy Discovery

Twelve years and vast oceans have separated them. Can a chance encounter rekindle their love in just mere hours?

Not knowing how to tell her boyfriend that she wants to attend university in New York, Maya waits until the last possible moment. Seeing her off at the airport, Vivan is heartbroken, but he knows that nothing he could say will change her mind, so he does not intervene. Twelve years later, Maya has returned home to India to visit family. On her flight from Mumbai to her connection in Istanbul, Türkiye, fate seats Vivan in her row. With an unexpected extension to their layover, they are blessed with extra time to explore the city. However, Maya lives in the United States, and Vivan lives in London–will their short time together be enough to heal their hearts and rekindle their romance despite the distance?

The Flight Between Us is a sweet second-chance romance novella. Told from dual perspectives throughout the book, the reader experiences both Maya's and Vivan’s thoughts and emotions in real time. With only a short period to make up for twelve years of heartache, the characters must process their feelings quickly, but the story never feels rushed. While some novellas may feel incomplete, that is not the case for June Sagewood’s book. The story is very well-paced, and the resolution is satisfying.

With main characters in their mid-thirties, adult readers who prefer later-in-life romance books will appreciate The Flight Between Us. The romance is steamy and open-door but not explicit, making it appropriate for most readers. Diverse character representation and the awe of exploring a new and bustling city broaden the book’s scope. June Sagewood’s prose is eloquent, and her characters immediately draw the reader in with their depth and raw emotions. This novella is a worthwhile choice for those seeking a quick read that does not compromise on its impact. I look forward to reading more from June Sagewood following this debut.

Publisher's Synopsis:

A soulful, second-chance romance that will leave you breathless. One flight. One city. One last chance at the love story they never got to finish.

Twelve years ago, Maya chose ambition over love. Vivan chose silence over fighting for her. Now, fate has thrown them together again—on a long-haul flight and an unexpected layover in Istanbul.

As they wander the city’s historic alleys and vibrant streets, memories resurface, emotions simmer, and the question neither dared ask lingers between them: What if?

The Flight Between Us is a slow-burn emotional rollercoaster of longing, regret, healing, and hope. Set against the stunning backdrop of Istanbul, it’s a story about love lost, choices made, and the unexpected turns that bring us back to where we belong.
