Despite having a rough start, as the story progresses, this new adult romantasy becomes impossible to put down
Eve is a scholarship student at a university for both the magical and the mundane–those who do not have magic or know of its existence. Special enchantments conceal magic from those who do not wield it, and access to certain magics is only available to the elite. Eve is on a quest to find an artifact and discover why her parents were killed but must keep her identity concealed–especially from the man who seems to see right into her heart. Nate is a member of the Triad, but the more their combined magics flare, the harder it becomes for him to uphold his duty to report her.
I struggled to get into
Veiled Legacy at first. The opening scenes move very quickly and are somewhat cliché. There is also quite a bit of repetition, and the way the characters choose to ignore Mia’s strange, sporadic robotic behavior is unbelievable. However, I am very glad I stuck with it. Once more is revealed regarding the hidden secrets of banned magic and the more Eve understands her parents’ legacy, the story becomes very intriguing.
Nate is a difficult character, torn between duty and love, and at times, he is difficult to like. However, Annie Lavigne developed his characterization very well. Eve is powerful but somewhat naïve, and her hyperfocus leads her to reveal too much, putting herself in danger, and, by extension, making it harder for Nate to protect her. These two, together, are chaotic like a Tesla coil, their power surging and sparking but controlled and magnificent.
Overall, I truly enjoyed
Veiled Legacy and look forward to continuing the Bound by Magic series. Fans of new adult romantasy will be drawn to this enemies-to-lovers, fated mates romance as well as the political intrigue behind the prevailing magic system. Readers who find the beginning unengaging will be rewarded with a gratifying conclusion.
