Review: All Her Lies by Matt McGregor

★★★☆☆ Review: First, I would like to thank Inkubator Books for providing me with a free advanced reader copy of this book. This is my honest review. Fiction or rehearsal? Taking a job on a homestead owned by a thriller author and her husband seems like the ideal fresh start for Brie, who is escaping a controlling relationship. But being barred from using internet-enabled devices is unsettling, and is the author contemplating new twists for her next novel, or something more sinister? Brie’s entanglement in the couple’s lives leaves her questioning who can be trusted. All Her Lies starts out strong, and I quickly became engrossed in the plot. Brie is an unlikeable protagonist, but it’s hard not to root for her. As the novel progressed, though, I began to lose interest. Not only was the romantic subplot rushed and unbelievable, but the twists began to feel overdone. The story has good bones but lacks depth. Audience : adult Trigger warnings : violence Recommend...

Review:

A cliffhanger that will gut you

I haven't seen the Maxton Hall TV series, but the fact that a show was created made me interested in reading the new English translation of the book series. I was really excited when an email from NetGalley hit my inbox announcing it was available as Read Now for 24 hours!

While fighting against her growing feelings for James, Ruby also harbors a devastating secret that could ruin lives after stumbling into something she was never meant to see. Save Me deals with some darker subjects, giving it depth beyond other university romances I have read. I loved the growing chemistry between Ruby and James, and the ending, while shocking, made me eager to pick up the next book in the series. I'm glad the trilogy was translated and released in quick succession! I honestly couldn't wait to jump into Save You.

Audience: upper YA/new adult
Trigger warnings: drug/alcohol use, infidelity, death, grief, past child abuse
Recommended for fans of: school romance, rich/poor, hurt/comfort, enemies to lovers, forbidden romance

Publisher's Synopsis:

The first book in the international bestselling Maxton Hall series—now an Amazon Prime streaming series—in English for the first time.

They come from different worlds, and yet they are meant for each other.

Money, glamour, luxury, power—Ruby Bell couldn’t be less interested in these things if she tried. After being awarded a scholarship to one of England’s most prestigious and expensive private schools, Maxton Hall, all she wants is to keep her head down, work hard, and get accepted to Oxford. She keeps her distance from everyone, especially the arrogant, rich, and extremely handsome James Beaufort, ringleader of the school’s party boys.

When Ruby discovers a scandalous secret about the Beauforts, she is suddenly on James’s radar. It only gets worse when James is forced to work with her to plan the school's annual gala. Yet the more time they spend together, the more they realize they share much more than they thought.

Falling for James Beaufort was never part of her plan, yet Ruby can’t help but let her feelings sweep her away. But James must make a decision for himself: will he choose what’s expected of him, or what he feels for her?
