Review: All Her Lies by Matt McGregor

★★★☆☆ Review: First, I would like to thank Inkubator Books for providing me with a free advanced reader copy of this book. This is my honest review. Fiction or rehearsal? Taking a job on a homestead owned by a thriller author and her husband seems like the ideal fresh start for Brie, who is escaping a controlling relationship. But being barred from using internet-enabled devices is unsettling, and is the author contemplating new twists for her next novel, or something more sinister? Brie’s entanglement in the couple’s lives leaves her questioning who can be trusted. All Her Lies starts out strong, and I quickly became engrossed in the plot. Brie is an unlikeable protagonist, but it’s hard not to root for her. As the novel progressed, though, I began to lose interest. Not only was the romantic subplot rushed and unbelievable, but the twists began to feel overdone. The story has good bones but lacks depth. Audience : adult Trigger warnings : violence Recommend...

Review: Handle With Care by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen

★★★★☆

Review:

First, I would like to thank the author and Thomas Nelson for providing me with a free advanced listener copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Hope Amidst Suspense

Unable to accept that his wife has filed for divorce, a man holds her hostage at the post office where she works. Three women who are waiting to mail packages that could significantly change their lives are also held at gunpoint.

While the situation is terrifying, Handle With Care by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen is not a thriller. Taking a deeper look into the lives and motivations of all of the characters, including the hostage negotiator, this novel is instead a story of hope, community, and moving forward.

The hostage negotiator’s story was especially moving. I was cheering for her more than anyone, even though she was outside in relative safety.

Jane Oppenheimer’s narration was well done. With multiple characters of varying ages and genders, she managed to make each person distinct and convincing.

Audience: adult
Trigger warnings: domestic violence, gun violence, false imprisonment
Recommended for fans of: women's fiction, suspense, literary fiction

Publisher's Synopsis:

Three women walk into a post office. This is no joke--it's the spark that ignites a life-altering crisis.

On a quiet spring afternoon, an ordinary small-town post office becomes ground zero for a domestic dispute. A husband draws a weapon and seals the doors, holding four women captive: his frightened wife, a young woman searching for meaning amid uncertainty, a mother on the brink of letting go as her only daughter graduates, and an elderly woman concealing a secret that could shatter everything she knows.

Outside, the negotiator works to keep a fragile peace, forced to confront her own issues as every word becomes a lifeline.

Each of the three women who walked into the post office is carrying something that, if mailed, would profoundly change her life. As minutes become hours in this daylong siege, these strangers forge lasting bonds. Handle with Care shines a light on hope found even in the darkest moments, and illuminates how even strangers, thrown together by chance and hardship, have the power to change each other's lives.

This heartwarming women's fiction novel is laced with depth and humor--it's perfect for book clubs. Discussion questions are included to prompt lively conversations.
